Garden sculpture is not so much functional as the decorative element that gives the man-made scenery completion and filling it with emotions. This is one of the most "speaking" components of any landscape, which is brighter than others to reveal the nature and taste addiction of the owner of the garden plot, to tell about its attitude to art, and indeed life.

Sculpture is a unique component of the garden, since it is an independent product of art and at the same time part of the overall landscape composition. Today she will "raise" in a variety of corners: Statues can sit on garden benches, bird figures - "rest" on the fence, and dragonflies - "soar" over the leaves of water lily. The palette of materials used to create a garden sculpture is very wide: it includes a stone (both natural and artificial), metal, wood, ceramics, glass, plastic. A varied and techniques of work with each of them. Products produce serial and to order (author's works, of course, more expensive). Hospitality, the dominance of plastic dwarves and concrete angels in the garden markets leads to a mantle in the design of the precinct, because the pretty babies with wings beyond the shoulders are appropriate. Our article will tell about what is a complex and subtle process - the selection of sculpture.

1-5. Garden sculpture is completely tiny, as a miniature ceramic snail (1), and can compete in growth with trees as a cactus made of metal sheets (4). Each of them approaches its "place of registration" - snail settled on the shelf among the garden utensils, and Cactus - on the lawn next to the real green plantings. The harmonious environment is necessary any sculpture - only then it fully reveals its expressiveness. Stone butterfly, resting on a flower (2), to put well on the gravel space - the viewer will be interesting to compare different textures of stone. Metal birds flew to drinking (3) are accommodated near garden reservoirs, among garden beds or flower beds. Avot Stone Angel (5), a stylist to the classic, more capricious in question of residence, it can be positioned next to the front staircase, on the lawn with regular flower beds.

Style and sense of measure

Sometimes the lounge and the lounge, the landscape causes the feeling that there is not enough of something in it, and then the owners decide to supplement it with sculpture. It happens differently: walking through the garden market, the hostess will see charming butterflies made from openwork metal, and buy, and then thinks in what a flower garden to settle them ... not so important, exactly how it gets into your garden Or a different figure. It is important that she harmonize with the surrounding space in style, scale and mood. Viochucha words, of course, do not transfer all the laws of the combination; Many of them are increasing intuitively or from birth laid in genes in people with artistic taste. However, several general rules still exist. Thus, classic statues and vases suggest the style of the architecture of the house, landscape and sculpture as its parts. Any inconsistency of styles when working with a classic looks ridiculous and pretentious. A classic sculpture, made more often of stone or metal, quickly covered patina, gives rise to the feeling that the garden has its own story, and real or fictional is not very important. It also gives a landscape with solidity, so in private gardens it is often used when the frontal parquer is cleaned before windows at home.

Universal realistic images of animals, birds or fictional fabulous creatures - they are appropriate almost in any garden. But it must be remembered that they create the effect of the presence of a living being in the landscape. The feathered or dog is fastening little, and the feeling that there is a man or someone similar to it (for example, a garden scarecrow in the form of a terrible), for many it will be uncomfortable.

6-10. Decorative techniques for working with metal set, and they almost all apply when creating a garden sculpture. Some masters work with a sheet metal of different thickness, others prefer forging or casting, and someone creates magic from metal wire. From the wire you can create ready-made sculptures, and can-frames, which are then filled with moss sphagnum and plant plants in them: this technology came to us from Europe. The unexpectedly, the image of the sculpture invented by the author, the more interesting it will look in the garden. Baby chickens settled on the lawn lawn (6), elegant metal flowers (7) - next to the flower, a chair-chair (8) - on a playground for recreation, a tree with paradise birds (9) decorates water, his reflection is clearly visible in water. Moody flooring framed floral landings: live flowers here grow ahead with the creations of the sculptor (10).

Abstract sculpture of non-pigurative: it does not depict anything specific and is a composition of lines, geometric shapes and volumes. Many love these jobs, believing that they are more art, rather than the rest. Such sculptures can have a variety of dimensions: they are and very small, tall up to 50 cm, and gigantic, as it is called "growth to the sky." The latter, of course, are suitable for urban parks. By the way, the sculpture of different heights should be viewed from different distances: the operation with a height of 1m is better to contemplate, moving around 3m, and 2,5m- to 6-10m high. Perception is highly dependent on the color of the surface (the lighter, the greater the distance from which you can see all the details) and on the degree of its roughness. Glossy, glossing figures, as a rule, create the impression of coldness, removal from the viewer and at the same time seem to scream: "Look at me! I'm here!" And matte, rough surfaces attract to themselves and look calmer.

Place of registration"

The sculpture can be the dominant garden, its energy center - in this case it is established in view: in the middle of the lawn lawn, at the crossing of the tracks, at the end of the shrubs or trees alleys, under the arch of the arch, on the background of the wall of the house or the fence. "Back" should not be too bright or a motley so as not to distract attention from the sculpture. Often the figure is put on the elevation - specially erected pedestal or just on the hill.

11-15. Stone-material Durable, so all stone products, including sculptures, people perceives as reliable, durable, created for centuries. Compared with the metal or wood, this material is less plastic and flexible. The decorativeness of the stone is in its color, a figure and structure, as well as the texture of the face surface. Figure of the dog (11) and the stone flower-cream (13) are created by the very technology that Michelangelo wrote about: Take a block and cut off everything too much. Hat (12) is made of clay, but it seems woven from the rope, due to the skillful performance of the ornament. As if randomly left on the table, it will bring charm to any composition. Ceramic products are visually in something related by stone: usually they, too, first "read" as a weight, and only then the viewer pays attention to the details of the rooster scallops (14) or a miniature frog on a ball (15).

Opinion of a specialist

In all the variety of metallic sculpture, I would have allocated five stylistic groups: classic, naturalism, "inhabited world", Avangard and "Hram Art". Clerva, classical, include any imitation of an antique heritage. Such sculpture is made of bronze or copper or from the silumin, toned under them. Naturalism is images of real or fantastic creatures, "drawn" with accuracy to the smallest details. The topic of work from the "Inhabited World" group is the same - all living things. However, these figures are "clustered" not naturally accurately, but with a certain degree of abstraction. Avant-garde sculptures need to be inspired in the landscape carefully so that they do not dissonate with the environment. Today, the motives of the "life of life" are very popular and the desire to give a second or even a third lives to almost any everyfold subject. However, I recommend the artistic trash to post only in well-kept space so that there was no feeling of presence in the garden of thrown unnecessary things.

Natalia Zaitseva, landscape designer, teacher of the Garden Art of "Gertruda"

But the sculpture does not always dominate the garden - sometimes it is a pleasant "surprise", hidden among plants and opening only a very attentive eye. Then in the pond on one of the leaves of the pita suddenly you will see a frog, and on another-dragonfly, then among the climbing grapes you will see the crawling spider ... By the way, the figures of animals, birds and insects are better to "resettle", taking into account the natural range of their prototypes: Racing, Pelican And the ducks are among the coastal reservoirs in the reservoirs, the cat- on the ledge of the wall or between the beds, rabbit, in the grass, lizard- on the stones, and fluttering butterflies in flower beds.

16-20. A wooden sculpture is suitable for landscape landscapes, cantry-style gardens, it is "warm", very friendly man. Its surface is painted, if you require the plot and the environment (dancing couple among bright flower beds) (16) or leave natural otok, processing only protective compositions. Masterpieces can be created from the most seemingly inappropriate materials: the horse is made of corrupt branches (17), water-from logs and dies (18). Sometimes one spicy stroke and sculpture becomes unique and amazing, the author: in the duck hiding in the reeds (19) - this is a branch plumage. Emele (20), sitting in the flower beds with rural colors (primoses, geraniums), the hair was made of the canthaw, and on the head instead of the hat were put on an old unnecessary basket and a little man from non-zeanous coarse logs was transformed and seemed to come to life.

Placing a sculpture over water or next to it, often "play" with reflections. You can also "play" with shadows and stains of light. For example, in the garden that has reached the maturity, in the thick of shrubs or trees there are always "light windows" - the corners of space free from foliage. Depending on the location of the Sun in the sky at a particular moment penetrating through these "windows" rays arbitrate something alone, then the other accents - the solar spot slowly "crawling" in the garden. Light will fall on the sculpture - and it will shine, and then the stain will move and the sculpture again "hiding" into the shadow.

Opinion of a specialist

Wooden sculptures are cut out of one-piece full (like Dad Carlo - Pinocchio), weave from the branches, collect from bitch or knocked out of the boards. The gardens of the garden are appropriate different in the nature and mood of the product. So, at the entrance to the forest thickets you can put a batch sculpture, the silhouette of which resembles a fabulous forest character or an animal. Next to the barbecue area hangs or arrange wooden bowls or scales, any kitchen utensils. The playground is also a suitable "polygon": the animals and the heroes of fairy tales will be selected here, they put the developing mobiles from the tree - eco-friendly and pleasant to the touch of the material. If the host of a private "green cabinet" - a man, in this "room" will look good for a sundial or circula, and more romantic images are preferable. The decorative garden is decorated with fertility symbols, such as a large pumpkin. The classic of the genre - scarecrow, for the creation of which the tree also often use. The original idea is a chess field (size, for example, 1010m) with wooden figures.

The material side of the question

Often the material from which the sculpture is made, determines its location. So, glass works are better to place away from the playground or lawn for walking the dog, even if the glass is durable. The specificity of the care required by one or another product is also due to the characteristics of the material. Wooden figures are processed by antiseptics immediately after their manufacture, and then update the coating every 1-2 years. Sometimes they are also painted or toned depending on what effect they want to get: transparent tinting exhibit wood texture, while paints hide her. The paint is not only a tree, but also, for example, a black metal. Stone and metal sculptures are often attractive for birds, so from time to time they will have to be cleaned from litter. Often the stone is covered with moss and lichen. If the "overgrown" sculpture does not seem charming to you, its surface can be treated with special chemical compositions (Toroclir, Toroglays IDR.).

21. The romantic sculpture of lovers is placed in the corner of the garden, inaccessible to the stranger, in the green "rest room" or a secluded shady studio. Such a sculpture should be an unexpected discovery for a man walking in the garden for the first time.

22. The technique of execution of a sculpture depicting a person lying on Earth is unusual: at a distance of each other and parallel to each other, metal sheets of different shapes are placed, which only published "read" as a single image.

23. Windmills have long come out of use, but they are still attractive for romantics and dreamers. A small in size mill can be put even in the garden, making it a trough for birds or tool storage simultaneously.

The editorial board thanks the sculptors faith Viglin, Oliver Torshe and Ann-Celine Hess, Landscape Designers Natalia Zaitsev and Jan Korobov, as well as the "Trading House of the European Interior Art" and the Gardrud Garden Art Center for help in the preparation of the material.
